An Indigenous-owned cruise port, Port Klawock, opened in Southeast Alaska near the Tlingit village of Klawock on May 6.

Port officials celebrated with a ribbon-cutting when the Seabourn Odyssey became the first ship to dock in port.

The port on the Pacific side of Prince of Wales Island is the latest project from Na-Dena, a joint venture between Huna Totem Corp. and Doyon Ltd.; and Klawock Heenya, the Native village corporation of Klawock. All are Alaska Native corporations.

The new port development prioritizes respect for culture and community, said Russell Dick, Huna Totem Corp. president and CEO.

"As we did with Icy Strait Point, we are developing this project with the land and our shareholders in mind and cannot wait to share Klawock with the world," he said.

Ships will sail between two fjord entrances before arriving at the port, offering guests scenic views of mountain landscapes. The single-ship port includes a floating tender dock, welcome facilities, light retail options featuring Alaska Native arts and crafts, and a shore excursions dispatch.

The port connects by bridge to the Prince of Wales' road system to other communities and tour options.

At the port, shore excursions with local guides and a shuttle to Klawock and Craig are operated by Alaska Coach Tours. Excursions include a visit to the Klawock River fish hatchery and a paddle through Klawock lake, a wildlife marine tour and a tour of key historical sites in Klawock.
