The Walt Disney World Resort has filed permits for work at the Magic Kingdom to make room for the expansion of Frontierland with attractions from Pixar's "Cars" franchise.

Disney this past weekend announced the Frontierland expansion and the addition of a villain-themed land at Magic Kingdom. It is the largest Magic Kingdom expansion to date, Disney said.

To make room for Lightning McQueen, Tow Mater and friends, Disney will use the space currently occupied by the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. The area will be inspired by the "Western charm of iconic national parks," Disney said.

The area will contain two Cars-themed attractions, including a thrilling off-road ride around the landscape and an attraction designed for families. Work is expected to begin next year.

"We are thrilled to create this original Cars adventure and put our guests in the driver's seat as we -- quite literally -- explore a new frontier in Frontierland," said Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World portfolio executive producer at Walt Disney Imagineering. "Part of pioneering this new story includes tapping into the themes of exploration and adventure that inspire so many of us to keep propelling forward.

"Anytime we touch Magic Kingdom, we recognize the massive responsibility that exists to get it right and tell stories that connect with our guests," Hundgen added.

Disney said the villain-themed land will be located "just around the bend" and beyond Big Thunder Mountain. It will be a multi-acre expansion with two attractions, plus dining and shopping.

Disney said more details on these projects, and others announced at the D23 fan event, are forthcoming.
